The Sea-Sky Book
(A Four-line Nursery Rhyme)
月娘光光,照远洋;
FairLuna lights theocean;
Grandpa’s book hidesKing Dragon.
Compass-needle, turnsand turns;
Starsshinelike pearls, the seachurns.
日月悬罗盘;
Star-sparkstomasts fall,
Compassneath moon and sun.
Warp and weft run;
Age-old waves roar
Inthe palm e’er more.
龙脊越九渊;
Fish-fires light old slips;
The ocean guides our ships.
Routes spreadwhere ink’s cast;
Long long roads write the blue vast.
北斗穿针,启明引线;
The Dipper threads, the Morning Star draws;
Storms forge canons, tides make our cause.
OurSires’Sea holds all bright pearls
To stud the Chinesescroll that unfurls.
Ask the blue: who lifts the long scroll to Heaven’s door?
The dragon-soul surges past the ninth sky’s floor!
Ask the blue: who reads rise and fall with a smile?
Sea-routes stand as steles—each reef, each isle,
All are China’s blood, all the while.
Stride the blue--I ride long windsaswaves roar;
Dragon-scalesfurlcloud-vaults to soar.
Stride the blue--I link the Sky-Booksof yore;
With blue blood sworn, each sand, each shore
Returns to China’s chest to store.
彩虹贯云澜,天涯归千帆;
Rainbows pierce cloud-billows;far sails come back home.
This scroll unfurls;
The night lights all, all under the dome.
浪涌青瓷韵,永乐弦声远;
Porcelain waves resound with E’er Glee’sstrings played true;
A vast sea of glass,
Sunnyseas soak China-Blue.
行海驰原,耕海作田;
I sail the sea, I plough the brine.
Silk Roads bloombright; the booksbright shine.
OurSires’Sea, now in full prime,
We write to praise our time.
Stride the blue —I ride long windsaswaves roar;
Dragon-scalesfurlcloud-vaults to soar.
Stride the blue—I link the Sky-Books of yore;
With blue blood sworn, each sand, each shore
Returns to China’s chestto store.
