A Golf but without the prestige of a Golf badge was how one reviewer unenthusiastically welcomed Volkswagen's new T-Roc when it first appeared in 2017. Its odd name didn't help — neither did its overblown appearance as the "T-Rocstar" at the Guangzhou Motor Show that year. It seemed a bit kitsch, a knock-off Golf aimed at Chinese markets but without the benefit of a Chinese price tag.

The point of the T-Roc soon became clear. It was a Golf with the added benefits of an SUV: raised driving position for better visibility, a bigger, more accessible boot and more room for the rear passengers. Today, compared with the latest arrivals from the Far East, its styling looks positively restrained. But now, made mainly in China and Portugal, the T-Roc is one of Volkswagen's top three bestsellers, along with the Golf and the Tiguan.

It sounds almost heretical to say it, but the T-Roc may now have the edge. The Golf was once a byword for everything you could want from a car.

Buy a T-Roc. "I need a Golf-type car I can easily slide child seats in and out of without having to bend too far." Buy a T-Roc. "I need a Golf-type convertible because the Golf cabriolet was discontinued in 2016." Buy a £35,700 T-Roc cabriolet, although only while stocks last because VW hasn't yet added a convertible to the new-generation T-Roc line-up.

Another model missing from the refreshed range — for now — is the popular "R" version. The outgoing R was enormous fun to drive and boasted better acceleration than even the Golf GTI. The company says an updated R — with a zesty 333bhp — is on the way later this year. For the time being a 148bhp "R-line" is the closest thing. Fortunately, it's no slouch. It shifts gears snappily and the 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine pulls with gusto. To save costs and lower emissions regulations, there's consolidation going on across the whole VW range, and the updated T-Rocs are mild hybrids with electrically assisted combustion engines. There are no diesels or manual gearboxes.

This is useful if you're keen to break the silence on long journeys or you want to know more about, say, the local history of the area you're driving through.

One important point worth noting: in recent tests by Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme), the emergency braking system on older T-Roc models performed less well than those of newer rivals such as the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 3. NCAP said this is because since 2020 driver-assistance systems have become more sophisticated. We contacted VW but it was unable to say whether the T-Roc's emergency braking system has been updated in the latest-generation cars. It was also unable to say definitively whether the T-Roc's active cruise control (ACC) unit has been moved from directly behind the VW logo in the radiator grille, where it is vulnerable to theft. Some unfortunate T-Roc and Golf customers whose badges were stripped reported having to pay exorbitant sums to have ACC components replaced.
