在电影《巨星之路》中，MJ和妈妈一起看吃爆米花看卓别林电影的片段非常轻松愉快。据微博博主「冰红深蓝」的考据，他们看的是1936年的《摩登时代》。
MJ本人是卓别林的影迷，他曾经在1979年和1983年两次装扮成卓别林的样子拍摄专题写真。
在1995年发行的《HIStory》专辑中，MJ致敬偶像的曲目《Smile》正是《摩登时代》片尾，卓别林与宝莲·高黛在贫瘠中望向未来时的配乐。
这首由卓别林作曲的纯乐器旋律，后经他人在1954年填词后，变成了一首真正的歌曲《Smile》，成为传世爵士标准曲。
MJ非常喜欢这首歌。
波姬小丝在2009年MJ的公众追悼会中说：Michael's favorite song was not one of the countless masterpieces that he gave us. But it was a song that Charlie Chaplin wrote for the movie Modern Times. It's called Smile. There is a line in the song that says: "smile, though your heart is aching.（译文：迈克尔最爱的歌，并不是他创作的无数传世金曲，而是查理・卓别林为《摩登时代》写下的曲子 ——《Smile》。歌里有一句：“纵使心痛，也要微笑。”）
在接受滚石杂志采访时波姬小丝也曾口述：“When we’d ride in cars, hang out at his house, wander events together, he would hum Smile constantly under his breath, almost without noticing. It was his comfort song; whenever he was quiet, sad or overwhelmed, that melody would come out of him.”（译文：我们坐车、在他家小坐、一起出席活动时，他总会不自觉低声哼唱《Smile》，几乎浑然不觉。这是他的治愈之歌；只要他安静、难过或是压力巨大，这段旋律就会从他嘴里飘出来。）
作为《历史》这张充满对媒体愤怒抗争的专辑的最后一首曲目，MJ像是用这首歌，向歌迷们传递他已经与所有的怨恨和解，并且重新找回了内心的平静和希望的讯号。
这是一首非常适合循环播放的、宁静而悠扬的歌曲。与上一篇分享的《Childhood》类似，这首歌也是由MJ与纽约爱乐乐团合作录制。
据《迈克尔杰克逊所有的歌》中录音师回忆：“乐队在没有人声的情况下进行了一些排练，然后在第一次录音时MJ演唱。这几乎把他们从椅子上震了下来。”
MJ只录了一遍就与乐队一起录完了这首歌的完整版本，但是他对结果并不完全满意。因此，最终总共录制了14遍（专辑收录的为第一遍的录音）。录音结束后，MJ进入录音室向50位乐队演奏人员致意，他们都站起来热烈鼓掌。
